The Precision of a Warren and Brown Deflecting Beam Torque Wrench

The Precision of a Warren and Brown Deflecting Beam Torque Wrench

The Warren and Brown Deflecting Beam Torque Wrench is an icon in the Australian automotive industry. Designed and manufactured in Australia more than 60 years ago, the true quality of workmanship and unparalleled accuracy has enabled it to stand the test of time and to still be regarded as an invaluable tool for any serious mechanic.

How does it work and why does it possess such accuracy and longevity?

The Deflecting Beam torque wrench works by applying torque to a deflecting beam rather than a coil spring. Over time, a coil spring loses its compression and can be easily damaged if left under load for long periods of time. The recalibration and repair costs for these type of wrenches can be quite high throughout the life of the wrench. On the other hand, the deflecting beam torque wrench has no wearing parts and the unique design ensures accuracy of +/- 2% throughout the range of the wrench. The torque setting can be easily selected via a sliding scale which displays the torque units in ft.lbs, Nm and kg-cm. As torqueing force is applied, the beam begins to flex and as soon it reaches the selected torque setting, it engages the signalling mechanism which notifies the user that the setting has been reached. The dual signal feature allows the user to see and also hear when the selected torque has been reached.

The all steel construction ensures supreme durability and reliability in the harsh environments it is expected to operate in. A perceived disadvantage is that it does not contain a ratchet head which some users may prefer and the majority of models can only be used in one direction for tightening nuts or bolts. However, by attaching products such as ratchet adaptor or a torque-angle adaptor to the deflecting beam torque wrench, certain obstacles can be overcome and the wrench becomes much more versatile and suitable for almost any torque application.

The deflecting beam torque wrench has utilised a simple design with proven results and reliability over the years. It is a product that will maintain its accuracy over the long term due to it containing no wearing parts. Better still, the Warren and Brown deflecting beam torque wrench is still made in Australia!
